Acrylics: 7 things you should know

By Zoe Greenwood, October 3 2018

If you follow beauty instagrammers, chances are you’re deadly jealous over their hands. How can someone’s hands look that good, right? Over recent years, acrylics have become more popular with the choice of various nail shapes: coffin, round, square, stiletto – you name it.

This may seem tempting, but before you jump in the deep end and book an appointment, here are 7 things you should know before:

Be prepared for the cost

Acrylics are not a cheap hobby, they require constant upkeep if you want a long-lasting manicure. Basically, the problem with acrylics is that they constantly need to be filled; otherwise they no longer look like a million bucks. Obviously, there’s different places which may be cheaper or more expensive, but the fact at the end of the day, is that they require maintenance – we live by the phrase treat yourself!

Start short

Work your way up! If you’ve never had acrylics before then you’re not aware of the hassle they can actually cause. While looking at the hands of celebrities probably makes you want the longest nails, you’re better starting off small. Work your way up to long nails – that way you can get used to all the little things like buttoning up your jeans (just wait).

Your nails will be weaker

Having acrylics will make your nails feel weak. A lot of people start to pick at their nails or pull them off when they’re starting to grow out . All this will do is ruin your natural nails which looks a lot worse than not having acrylics in the first place. When you want to remove your acrylics, the best way is to soak them in acetone until they are soft, and you can file the rest of the acrylic off. While, this may seem a bit of a tedious task but trust us when we say it will be worth it!

They can be uncomfortable

Sometimes, you’ve got to suffer for beauty – just remember that. If you’re new to the acrylics trend, then they will probably feel a bit stiff and uncomfortable. This is usually because you won’t be used to the length of your nails so they will feel different. But if it continues to annoy you after a couple days, you can always go back to the salon and ask them to be shortened or even removed if they’re that bad.

They complicate things

Suddenly opening a canned drink, picking up coins and typing has become the hardest task in the world? Acrylics will make you realise how much you took these little things for granted, but it’s not the end of the world. You’ll either get used to the nails or just realise these tasks are not as important as having fab nails…after all, we do have autocorrect on most devices now so that will take care of the typos you’re likely to experience.

Don’t settle

You wouldn’t walk out of a hair salon unsatisfied…well maybe you would, but why walk out of a nail salon unhappy? These will be your nails for at least 2 weeks and you best believe they’re going to look fabulous. Don’t be scared to ask your nail technician to file more, change the colour or even change the shape. They are there to make you happy and, let’s be honest, you deserve the best.

They’re addictive

You may be thinking that you will only get them once, maybe for a wedding or a party – you know, when it’s necessary. But, acrylic nails can become a serious addiction. Going back to natural nails will require  will power because we all know they’ll never look as good as a set of beautifully done acrylics.

There you have it! You might be thinking that they’re not all that after reading this but trust us when we say you will be feeling yourself after having your nails done. Your self-esteem will hit the roof, which might annoy your family and friends, but they’ll live. After all, it’s not every day you’ll have fancy, instagrammable nails!
