Things to do near Walthamstow
Spend the day at Walthamstow Wetlands
Recently opened to the general public, Walthamstow Wetlands is a great opportunity to spot the local wildlife and many different species of bird. The nature reserve is part of the Lee Valley Reservoir Chain, which is proudly Europe’s largest urban wetland reserve. Located in the nature reserve, you will find lakes, cycling and jogging trails and a cafe.
Just 15 minutes away from central London, the best way to get there is by train to Blackhorse Road Underground. There is free admission to the reserve.
Take in some inspiration at William Morris Gallery
William Morris was a craftsman, designer and well-known socialist in Walthamstow. This gallery is home to many of his great works, including antique wallpapers and other intricate designs. His work is widely recognised, so see if you can spot any familiar pieces. It is the perfect stop on a lazy weekend.
The gallery is surrounded by Lloyd Park, a great walk to chat about the art you’ve seen. Not to mention, there’s a great duck pond too. You can get to the gallery via Walthamstow Central or Blackhorse Road, both on the Victoria Line.
Explore God’s Own Junkyard
“Heavenly junk in a hell of a location”.
Home to Europe’s largest collection of neon signs. Even if you are solely going to view the signs, it’s well worth the visit. This is the perfect place for those who love quirky scenery and fun atmospheres. The signs were all created by the late, great artist Chris Bracey.
There is an outside terrace and bar to enjoy your meal with a view. So grab your funkiest outfit to feel at home in the retro ambience.
